A sans-serif typeface assembled from a sound transmission. The designer
never saw our alphabet — only heard it — and drew what each letter
sounded like as it arrived.

The recording arrived in twenty-six segments, one for each letter, accompanied by a key that paired each segment with its symbol in our writing system. The visitor never opened the symbol file. They listened.
What you are reading is their notebook. Open vowels became open mouths. Plosives became single impacts surrounded by space. Continuous sounds — the hum of M, the hiss of S, the buzz of Z — became continuous shapes. The letters that sounded most alike were drawn most alike. The letters that sounded distinct were drawn distinctly.
The result is not a translation. It is a transcription of what the alphabet sounds like, by someone who had no reason to imitate the forms we already use.

Wovels open, plosives explode, sibilants slide. The whole alphabet, transcribed from sound to shape by a careful listener with no prior reference.
All consonants and vowels of the standard ASCII range plus digits 0 through 9 and basic punctuation, drawn in a unified geometric vocabulary of lines, arcs, circles, dots, and waves; nothing more than the minimum required to distinguish one sound from another at a glance.

The visitor listened to twenty-six recordings and produced twenty-six
shapes. Each shape carries one rule: it must remind the listener of the
sound, not of any letter they have seen before. Open vowels became open
mouths. Hums became humps. Hisses became waves. The plosives — those
sudden bursts of breath — became small impacts on a vertical stem. The
visitor was patient. They drew, listened, redrew. By the end of the
recording the alphabet was complete, and the visitor placed it next to
the radio and went home. We found it later, on the table, with no note
attached.
